I am helping my child to report 1099-MISC, which contains just one number - Nonemployee compensation in the box #7, so we provided that data for the 1099-MISC form in turbotax, then TurboTax asked to describe the activity my child did si we answered "Assistant coach". Eventually TurboTax said that it found 9 issues and asked to fix them and they are related to Schedule C, to me the questions which are asked by TurboTax are kind of confusing because we already provided 1099-MISC info and I don't ...
In my opinion.... First, when ANYONE receives a 1099-MISC with box 7 as "non employee compensation" it is treated as a business. Business name at this point is the "taxpayers name" and the description of activity of asst. coach, seems to fit. With that being said, I would recommend finding out the details of this "assistant coach" position... and take full advantage of the occupation and allowed expenses. Only then, can you cmoplete your own tax return, with the full allowances.
In TurboTax enter at:
-Business Tab
-Continue
- I'll choose what I work on
-Business Income & Expenses
Or type> business income, self employment <in the search box
Or In TurboTax (TT), enter at:
- Federal Taxes tab (Personal in Home & Business)
- Wages & Income
- “I’ll choose what I work on” Button
Scroll down to:
- Other Common Income
-Income from Form 1099-Misc
Be advised that the self employed have to pay both the employer and employee share of FICA (social security & Medicare) tax. This is known as self employment tax (SET) and is in addition to income tax. TT automatically calculates this when you enter self employed income, from box 7 of the 1099-Misc, and completes schedule SE.
