I received a Form 1040-V from the IRS today, but elected direct debit. Why doesn't Turbo Tax clearly show how I am paying the amount due?

I received Form 1040-V from the IRS today, but I am sure I elected to use the direct debit feature to pay what I owe. I e-filed my return. I cannot see anywhere online or in my PDF copy of my return where it confirms my direct debit or tells me I need to send a check. The Form 1040-V says to enter the payment due amount from line 78 of my 2017 return. Should I just ignore the 1040-V? Why am I getting this form if I set up the direct debit feature? Why doesn't Turbo Tax clearly show how I am paying the amount due?

First verify that you chose direct debit.

  • Log into your account, scroll down a bit and select, 'add a state'. You aren't really adding a state, just opening up the return.
  • Select Tax Tools, Print Center on the left.
  • Select print, save or preview this year's return.
  • Select the 2017 federal return, then select 'Include government and TurboTax worksheets'. Then preview the forms
  • Scroll the pdf and look for Federal Information Worksheet. Part V has the direct deposit/debit info.

If you chose direct debit, then you can dispose of the 1040-V voucher.

Thank you. I guess the problem was that I was looking at the PDF copy that I had saved on my computer. That did not have the Turbo Tax Information Worksheets in it. After pulling a few hairs (I don't have many!) I decided to look at the print out I made when I completed the returns. The print out does have the information sheets for both Federal and State returns and those show that I did set up direct debit. I'm not sure why those sheet didn't show up on line nor in the downloaded PDF. I had forgotten that they were included in the printout. Thank you for your help. Thank you, IRS, for creating confusion.

You are welcome 🙂 There are a few different ways to save/print pdf's and you are correct they can be confusing. I will summarize in answer below.

Is the federal Information Worksheet sent to the IRS when filing electronically?

If not, how does the IRS know you are requesting Direct Debit of tax due?

Yes, the necessary government forms and worksheets are transmitted to the IRS when your return is e-filed.
