I need urgent help with my 2023 TAX amendment

Hi, so i mailed my 2023 tax in December and should get about 13.5K refund. However, i still don't have a refund and just realized that 2 entries are incorrect, the TAX i entered in w2 is 2K higher than the amount should be and the other error is in education credit where i reported 5300 instead of 530 so the credit will reduce by $700 too. The new refund should change to 10.7K. What should i do? i tried to create an amendment and it shows i owe IRS 2700 but I haven't even received my original refund to owe anything. Please advise me of how to go about this, i was hoping my money would come by now but it looks like it is stuck! when i check the "where is my refund" website it shows the "Return Received"

I haven't mailed the amended tax return yet.

I recommend that you wait to receive your refund before sending your amended return.

The IRS will probably detect the error in the withheld tax and correct your refund.

Your amended return should then only list the error(s) not yet corrected by the IRS.

On your amended return, the tax due is assuming that you have received the refund listed on your original return.

You need to wait for the IRS to process the original return.  Sending an amended return before that will be a recipe for more confusion and longer delays.   You say you mailed the return in December---so it has been only about a month or so since you even mailed it.   It takes at least four weeks before a human at the IRS opens the envelope and puts the return into the system.    You can watch for information on the IRS refund site.

You need your filing status, your Social Security number and the exact amount  (line 35a of your 2024 Form 1040) of your federal refund to track your Federal refund:

https://www.irs.gov/refunds

It is possible --- but not guaranteed -- that the IRS will catch the mistake you made with the W-2.  That might put your return under review and you might get a letter.  If the IRS wants more information from you they will send a letter to request it.   Make sure you have a copy of that W-2 in case they ask you to send in another copy.  You did include a copy when you mailed it, right?

Thank you. No, I didn't include my W2! I was under the impression they already had the record! What would happen now?

Again----you just have to wait.   Whenever you file a tax return by mail, you are supposed to attach copies of your W-2's and any 1099's that show tax withheld.   The IRS does have the W-2 information that the employer sent to them in the system.  And what you entered on your tax return is not going to match their records.  They might send you a letter asking for a copy of your W-2.    You might have a longer wait than you want to have.  Sorry.
