Do not use the Amend using TurboTax Online button. Instead do this:
Thanks. That button works and takes me to the area to amend the return, but then there's nowhere to actually amend the return. It just takes me through the error check and asks if I want to file the return.
Did you look at the link I included? It tells you once you are back into your return, you need to make the changes you are amending for.
Yes, then I click on "I haven't finished my amended return and want to make changes before I file." That takes me to a place to check the state return (although I don't need to amend the state return). Once the state return is checked it takes me to a place to file. There is nowhere to actually amend the federal filing.
When you're in the place where you are checking your state return you will still be able to access the information that you entered on your federal return. That is how you make adjustments to the state return. Once you change information on the federal return it will walk you through filing the amendment.
There is no button to access the federal portion or to make changes. It checks my return, gives me a recap to tell me how great TurboTax is, and then says "Return status: Federal return: Filed". The software currently does not support amendments. Please let me know when this functionality is added back. I have tried the online help and calling but those functions also no longer exist.
Federal laws were changed and made retroactive as Biden was leaving. The changes must be made at the federal level and then the software level. You want to select to amend using the desktop, then download the software from the amend section, you can continue moving forward provided you are not filing casualty losses. You can download your .tax file with all your information so you pick up where you left off.
When I download the desktop software it wants me to download both states where I filed. The second state costs $45 (which I already paid for with the online version). I only need to amend federal, so how do I skip the part where I pay a second time for states?
It depends. When working with Turbo Tax software, it will insist that you pay for the second state regardless rather you need it or not. My suggestion would be to pay for the state and contact Turbo Tax customer support here to have this money refunded to you to avoid any delay in filing your amendment.
