To clarify what you are asking, where did you put the withholdings? If you were self-employed you may have made estimated payments for your self-employment.

The IRS wants documentation to substantiate my withholdings that were placed on my schedule c, but the mistake is that it’s federal withholdings not my self employment withholdings. Even as I was walking thru the turbo tax process I thought I was understanding what was being asked. But clearly being a 1099 is more complicated. At this point they don’t want a 1040-X, but how do I communicate to them that I messed up and I don’t have Federal withholdings as an Uber Driver. If I create an annual income statement will that be enough information? Or do I need to submit a letter explaining what happened along with an income statement?

If you reply to the IRS in writing that you do not have withholding,

then IRS will subtract that amount and the amount you owe will go up by that much.

You will get either a bill from IRS or a reduced refund.

" not my self employment withholdings. "

as a self-employed person, you pay quarterly "Estimated Tax".

Is that what you are referring to?

If so, you can say that you made those payments but put them on the wrong line on Form 1040.

That should be satisfactory.
