Your information does save as you go through each section in TurboTax.

Plus, when you sign out, we'll make sure to save everything before we log you out.

To save your progress in TurboTax Online, you can go to the My Account menu near the top of your screen, and select Save & Sign Out. Your progress within TurboTax Online is generally saved automatically as you work on it, but using this extra step in the menu option never hurts!

You can save your 2016 desktop (CD) Turbotax return as a tax data file. In fact, that is the default method of saving your return when using a desktop TurboTax program.

When you "Save" (or "Save As") your tax return in a desktop version (CD/Download) of TurboTax, it automatically saves it as a tax data file (XXXXX.tax2016).

I'm trying to save my return and come back at a later time to pay. But it doesn't seem to give me that option

I tried that twice and it did not work.   After I purchased the CD and tried installing the software on my hard drive, it didn't work and customer support discovered that my license code wasn't being recognized so they gave me a different license code which allowed the software to be downloaded, but now the 4-5 hours I spent putting in data still did not get saved.   Extremely Frustrating!!!!

Are you trying to save a backup of your tax file? If so, please follow the steps in the below TurboTax FAQ to save a backup copy of your return.  If you need assistance with something different, please provide additional details so that we can better assist you.

How do I back up my tax file in the TurboTax CD/Download software?
