You will need to contact the IRS for information. It might be easiest to set up an account with them.

IRS Individual Online Account

  • Taxpayers with a Social Security number or an Individual Taxpayer Identification Number can create or access their IRS Individual Online Account to get information they need to file their return.
  • With an IRS Individual Online Account, people can:
  • View balance owed, payment history and schedule payments.
  • Cancel scheduled payments.
  • Get transcripts.
  • View or create payment plans.
  • See digital copies of some IRS notices.
  • View key data from their most recently filed tax return, including adjusted gross income.
  • Validate bank accounts and save multiple accounts, eliminating the need to re-enter bank account information every time they make a payment.
  • View, approve and electronically sign power of attorney and tax information authorizations from their tax professional.

What paperwork went missing?   Did you work at any jobs from which you should have received W-2's?   Or did you work as an independent contractor for a client that would have issued a 1099 NEC to you?

If you need to file some tax returns for past years, you can use TurboTax for 2021 to the current year 2024.   The first place to try getting copies of any W-2's is to contact the old employers and ask for copies.

Or you can also get a wage and income transcript from the IRS that will show any income reported to the IRS under your Social Security number for those years.

https://www.irs.gov/individuals/get-transcript       You want the one called a Wage and Income transcript.

If you can put together your income information for the past years, you can file tax returns.  You can purchase past year TurboTax software or there are some free software companies that will still let you prepare past year returns if you google for them.

Or we can provide links to the paper forms to prepare the returns by hand to mail in.

If you did not file a 2021 return, and if NO one could claim you as a dependent for 2021, it is not too late to file a 2021 return to get the $1400 stimulus check.  But you have to file by April 15, 2025 or it will be too late.
