When you amend your tax return to change your dependency to being a dependent then the IRS will know that you should have not received a stimulus payment.
Whether or not you are contacted by the IRS concerning this improper payment is not really relevant. You should return the payment that did not belong to you.
If you found a wallet on the street and it contained $1,200 in cash along with a driver's license having the name and address of the owner of the wallet, what would you do?
"TurboTax did not properly claim me as a dependent on my return (I answered all questions honestly)"
The screen right after you entered your date of birth asked "Can anyone claim you as a dependent on their tax return?" Did you answer "yes" or no? You should have answered YES. TurboTax does not enter that answer for you--the user answers that question.
Somehow, kids with first jobs often seem to interpret that question to mean "Do you depend on anyone else for spending money?" And then think, heck no, I make my own spending money now that I have a job, so they answer "No" to the question. And when a dependent answers that question incorrectly, the parents who can claim a qualifying child (up to age 24 if the kid is a full-time student) find themselves unable to e-file their own tax return. The parents have to file by mail---which makes it take WAY longer for the IRS to process.
So.....learn from this year. If you have a job and next year you file a 2020 tax return, when it asks if you can be claimed as someone else's dependent---say YES.
