If you e-filed your amended return, then all you do is send in your payment with the 1040-V payment voucher with your check.
If your mailing in your amended return, you would include the check with the amended return. You don't need the payment voucher.

An amended return can certainly be e-filed. You can e-file your 2021 1040-X. For years prior to 2021, you'll need to print and mail your amended return. The original answer was correct.
Also,
Can I file my Amended Return electronically? If you need to amend your 2019, 2020 and 2021 Forms 1040 or 1040-SR you can now file the Form 1040-X, Amended U.S. Individual Income Tax Return electronically using available tax software products.
@sammiejofelton If your amended return was transmitted & accepted, then your amended return went through.
You can track your amended return on the IRS website.

I amended by return through turbo tax and it was automatically sent electronically through their system and the IRS accepted the amended return. So does them accepting the return not count?

If I paid originally, do I still need to send in the voucher?
@cgoodwyn If you already paid taxes owed, you donāt need to send in the payment voucher.
IGNORE the payment voucher if you are amending the return ... if you have a balance due on the 1040X you send it with the 1040X ... no voucher is needed.
Look at the form 1040X ā¦
Column A should have the figures from the original return, Column C the corrected figures and Column B the differences between the other 2 which needs an explanation on page 2 of the form 1040X.
If you completed it correctly you will see an entry on either line 16 OR 18:
On line 16 should be the amount you paid with your original return. If you paid nothing already then this line should be zero.
On line 18 should be the amount of your original refund you received. If you have not received your refund yet then you need to wait for it. If the refund changes from what you expected then this line must reflect that change.
Then you will see your extra refund on line 22 OR the new balance due you need to pay on line 20.
Hi, I have a question to ask about this topic. I forgot to report 1099-B on 2021 tax return so I am doing the amended tax now to report it. My original tax return, I paid a check of $8100 ($8000 tax owe plus $100 penalty). The amended return shows amount owe is $10,000. So, do I include a check of $2000, or a check of $1900 ($10,000 minus $8100 paid)? I am sort of confused how to handle the payment I should be including. Thanks.
Yes, pay only the balance you owe on the amendment after subtracting your original payment of tax due. You can try the following to enter the tax paid, it would seem the payment with your original return should come into the return, however you may be able to add it by using the steps below.
So in my example, I should include a check of $2000 (do not count the penalty I paid), correct?
also very weird that Turbo tax is not pulling the right amount on Column A when I compared to my original return, but it seems the new 1040 form is calculating the tax correctly with the new income info I entered. Does that matter if Column A info is not matching what I have originally? Thanks.
Yes, you would include the check of $2000 with your mailed 1040X.
However, the 1040X should only show what you owe in addition to what you already paid. Line 16 on the 1040X should show the amount you paid with your original return, and Line 20 should show the additional amount due.
You may need to go to FORMS and type in the $8100 you paid on Line 16, so that Line 20 correctly reflects the $2000 additional due.
Oh my Line 16 is empty. So I need to add this by accessing FORMS. But I think I should enter $8000 tax owe in Line 16 (not including the $100 penalty) when I followed the questions. Is that correct?
Also, when I hit the button for āAmended Returnā, I noticed my original return in the software also updated to the amended version. Is that correct, or did I do something wrong?
