Do you have a TurboTax Online account?

We'll help you get started or pick up where you left off.

I filed my taxes 6 weeks ago. I received my state already on time but I still haven't received my federal. I've never had this problem before. Is this normal?

Everything was accepted but for some reason federal is taking a long time.

Federal and state refunds come from completely separate entities.  There is no rule as to which one will come in first or how long it will be between their arrival in your account.

TurboTax gives you an estimated date for receiving your refund based on a 21 day average from your date of acceptance, but it can take longer.  “21 days”  is not a promise from TurboTax or the IRS.

First, check your e-file status to see if your return was accepted:

Once your federal return has been accepted by the IRS, only the IRS has any control.  TurboTax does not receive any updates from the IRS. Your ONLY source of information about your refund now is the IRS.

You need your filing status, your Social Security number and the exact amount  (line 35a of your 2023 Form 1040) of your federal refund to track your Federal refund:

To track your state refund:

If you chose to have your TurboTax fees deducted from your federal refund, that will take some extra time, while the third party bank handles the refund processing.

  • Thank you for your response but I have done all of that as far as checking the status. I know state and federal are from 2 separate places but I have never received my state before my federal in the 20 years I have been filing.  That is what caused my concern. My return has been "processing" for 6 weeks now going into the 7th week which has never happened to me and I'm just curious if other people are having the same problem because maybe they are backed up or if maybe I need to contact an actual IRS office.
