I accidentally clicked that “Someone Can Claim Me As A Dependent”

I’m 22 years old, working and going to school full time. I clicked the box that said I could be claimed but I will not be and no one will be claiming me. How can I fix this? I do believe making this mistake has made my return 0$, and I also will be missing out on the stimulus package. I also on my tax return failed to add that I missed out on last years stimulus packages, is there anyway I can fix or change that? Help would be greatly appreciated.

If you cannot be claimed as a dependent (please see requirements here who can be claimed and therefore is a dependent) then you will have to amend your tax return once your original tax return has been processed.

Please be aware that you can e-file your 2020 amended federal tax return (1040X). Please see FAQ How to amend a tax return for instructions. Please see Where's My Amended Return? to check the status of your amended return.

To claim the Recovery Rebate Credit in TurboTax, please follow these steps:

  1. Log into TurboTax.
  2. After entering all your information click "Federal Review" at the top of your screen.
  3. On the screen "Let's make sure you got the right stimulus amount" click "Continue".
  4. You will be asked about the amounts of first round and second round stimulus payments you received.  If you did not receive a payment enter "0".
  5. TurboTax will then calculate the amount of stimulus payment remaining that you are still entitled to get.
  6. Any stimulus amount remaining due to you will show as a credit on line 30 of the 1040.

To be eligible for the credit you need to be a U.S. citizen or U.S. resident alien in 2020 and have a Social Security number that is valid for employment.

You cannot be claimed as a dependent by someone else to be eligible.

Your credit amount will be reduced if your 2020 adjusted gross income (AGI) is more than:

  • $150,000 if married and filing a joint return or filing as a qualifying widow or widower
  • $112,500 if filing as head of household or
  • $75,000 for eligible individuals filing as a single or as married filing separately.

Your payment will be reduced by 5% of the amount by which your AGI exceeds the applicable threshold above. (IRS FAQ Recovery Rebate Credit )

How do I add the Recovery Rebate Credit on my 1040-X? I originally forgot to put it on my tax return and will greatly miss out on the stimulus packages that will help me.

Amended Federal tax returns will not be available until March 25.  See forms availability.

If you used TurboTax Online, simply log in to your account and select Amend a return that was filed and accepted

If you used our CD/download product, sign back into your return and select Amend a filed return. You must file a separate Form 1040X for each tax return you are amending.

In TurboTax Online, you are prompted to input stimulus check 1 and stimulus check 2 information under Review down the left hand side of the screen.

You can access your stimulus check choices by following these steps:

  • Down the left side of the screen, click on Federal.
  • Across the top of the screen, click on Other Tax Situations.
  • At the screen Let’s keep going to wrap up.  Click on Let’s keep going.
  • At the screen Let’s make sure you got the right stimulus amount, click Continue.
  • At the screen Did you get a stimulus payment? you can update your stimulus check entries.

TurboTax will compare your two payment amounts to the computation within TurboTax.  The computations within TurboTax are based upon the information that has been entered into the tax software.  If you are due an additional amount, it will be issued as a Rebate Recovery Credit (RRC) on line 30 of the 2020 1040 tax return.
