When will my tax payment go through?
During non-peak times, funds are usually withdrawn on the payment date you specify, assuming your e-filed return has already been accepted (received) by the IRS.
If that date happens to fall on a weekend or federal holiday, the funds are typically withdrawn the next business day.
Now, if you filed right before (or on) the busy April 18 deadline, the IRS may not be able to debit your payment until after the deadline, due to high e-filing volume. In addition, it can take your bank another few days to post the debit to your account.
No worries; as long as you filed your return or extension on or before April 18 and you selected April 18 (or earlier) as your payment date, you won't get penalized for late payment.
In the meantime, keep an eye on your bank account – if you still don't see the debit 7-10 days after your return has been accepted, call IRS e-file Payment Services at 1-888-353-4537 or contact your state tax agency, as appropriate.
**** Make sure you set up the payment
correctly ****
Check the printout or PDF of your return; look for the federal and state filing instruction sheet with the Turbotax logo.
If you owed tax, they will show the payment information and how you decided to pay.
>If you indicated pay by mail, then you need to mail in a check.
>If you selected credit card, it will probably be processed in a couple of days.
>If you selected debit from your bank account, that information is passed on to the state and IRS and they will do the debit when they process your return information -- usually 1-3 weeks for e-file and 3-4 weeks if mailed in.
> If you also owe the state ... read the state payment instructions carefully since most states cannot be paid from within the TT system and requires additional steps. https://ttlc.intuit.com/questions/1900884-what-are-my-options-for-getting-my-state-refund-or-for-pay...
How long does it take for IRS to take amount owed from my bank account
Hello, I set up through Turbo Tax to have the IRS take out the money I owe them automatically from my credit union account on the 5th of every month and still nothing has been taken out. I set it up on June 5, 2020 and it's July 16, 2020 now. Has anyone else had this problem, oh also every time I get on the IRS website it says that my account information is not available at this time, with no reason why.
The delay this year is not unusual ... so if you set up the debit correctly just be patient as the IRS catches up after the covid shut down.
How you chose to pay the taxes owed will be on the Filing Instructions page included with your tax return.
Sign onto your TurboTax online account - https://myturbotax.intuit.com/
Scroll down and click on Add a State. This will take you back to the 2019 online tax return.
Click on Tax Tools on the left side of the online program screen. Then click on Print Center. Then click on Print, save or preview this year's return.
I have not. on 6/30/2020 I used IRS Direct Pay and my state's website to have payments taken out of my bank a/c on 7/15/2020. They came out on that date.
Payments made directly on the IRS/state sites do pay on the same day and you get a receipt of payment immediately ... however when you choose to pay via the tax return filing it can take some time to happen... just the difference in methods.
Thanks again for the info. Would you happen to know if I was supposed to also set something on line through the IRS website? Or is setting it up to pay automatically on the Turbo Tax website good enough?
If you set up the payment sent with your return thru the TT system you will not get any acknowledgement from the IRS ... your only proof of payment will be on the bank/CC statement.
Ok thanks again. So it looks like I'll just have to wait until the IRS takes it out automatically from my account. I just really hope that I'm not going to get dinged because of them taking their time to take it out. You'd think that it should be simple to automatically take it out...but I guess not.
I was just thinking that maybe I was supposed to send in the 1st initial payment before the IRS starts taking it out automatically? It's Aug. 5, 2020 and they still haven't taken any money out of my account. Please someone get back to me, I'm so worried.
You can always make a payment online at anytime ... just be aware the payment plan can start at anytime without warning so don't leave yourself short in the account. https://www.irs.gov/payments

Hi all, I am going through the exact same thing for but for 2020 taxes.
So I can stop panicking, can you guys tell me what happened in the end? Did IRS debit your bank account much later on or something else?
Call IRS e-file Payment Services 24/7 at 1-888-353-4537 to inquire about your payment, but please wait 7 to 10 days after your return was accepted before calling.
