How long does a claim stay pending?

A return will be pending until The IRS accepts or rejects it. This could happen within 24-48 hours from when you e-filed. States can remain pending even longer. The TurboTax FAQ's below explain in detail what pending, accepted, or rejected means and how to track your refund.

The tax return will be Pending until the IRS starts receiving tax returns on and after January 27 - https://www.irs.gov/newsroom/irs-opens-2020-filing-season-for-individual-filers-on-jan-27

No, your federal return will stay in Pending status until the IRS starts processing the backlog of returns.

After January, e-filed returns generally sit in Pending status for 24–48 hours before coming back as either Accepted or Rejected.
