To access your prior year online tax returns sign onto the TurboTax website with the User ID you used to create the account - https://myturbotax.intuit.com/
Start the 2023 online tax return by entering some personal information then click on Tax Home on the left side of the screen.
On the Tax Home webpage -
Scroll down to the section Your tax returns & documents. Click on the Year and Click on Download/print return (PDF)
If you used the desktop CD/Download editions installed on your computer, the only copy of your tax data file and any PDF's will be on the computer where the return was created. TurboTax does not store online any returns completed using the desktop editions.
Or go to this IRS website for free federal tax return transcripts - https://www.irs.gov/individuals/get-transcript
For a fee of $43 you can get a complete federal tax return from the IRS by completing Form 4506 - http://www.irs.gov/pub/irs-pdf/f4506.pdf
As DoninGa mentioned, you can access your 2017 tax return by logging in to the program using the same username and password you used to file your 2017 return. If you do not remember what account you used you can go here to find all of your accounts.
I'm also trying to access my 2017 return in TT - did you find a solution?

Thanks for your response!
The tax return PDFs are not available for download, only a .tax file which I can't open.
Is there any chance you can help open it and convert to PDF? I'm happy to pay for the service.
You may have to wait to get the pdf until Turbo Tax finishes transitioning to 2024 and has opened the 2024 Online versions. If you can’t wait and have the .tax2017 file you could try the TaxPrinter service (not connected with Turbo Tax) to convert a .tax file to pdf at
if you used online, they may have been permanently deleted because Turbotax only saves the last 6 or 7 years. 2023 would be year 7. the same as the IRS. you can access the IRS website to request a transcript. if you need the return you'll need to file form 4506 or 4506-tT for transcript only. don't know if 2017 is available because the IRS has substantially altered its web page for transcripts.
in the future, once your return is complete save a copy as a pdf. I save two copies. one on my computer and one on my thumb drive in case one drive goes bad.
received a letter from the state of Illinois saying that I owe taxes from 2017 and I distinctly remember filing my taxes with the state of Illinois in 2017. I am trying to locate my 2017 return but cannot figure out where that would be located on this site. Anytime I open "Documents" and select "personal" it says "coming soon". I have 2 weeks now to respond and need these documents faster than soon.

TurboTax only retains the online tax returns for the past 7 years. The 2017 tax return is no longer available.
