How can I change my banking direct deposit information after I have filed my return?

Once your return has been accepted (or mailed), it's too late to change your bank account for direct deposit. If the info you provided is for a closed or invalid account, the government will just mail you a refund check.

However, if your return gets rejected you can update this information by opening your return and going back to the file section.

If your return hasn't already posted to the IRS's system, you can ask them to stop the direct deposit. You may call them toll-free at 1-800-829-1040, Monday - Friday, 7 a.m. - 7 p.m.

Please see FAQ (click on see entire answer), for more information about closed/invalid account: https://ttlc.intuit.com/replies/3302459

If there was an error with your account number the IRS will mail a check to the address on your tax return.

How can I change my banking direct deposit information after I have filed my return?

I have no idea why the IRS does not implement a section in their website to allow tax payers an opportunity to make changes to their bank account routing and account numbers. This is unacceptable on the IRS's behalf.

In my opinion, the IRS should take heed on how the Employment Development Department (EDD) provides unemployment payments to recipients out of work. The EDD provides a debit card to the recipient and deposits money into the card account. The debit card doesn't care whether the recipient has changed their personal banking information, or if he/she even has a bank account at all.

I would rather have the IRS deposit my refunds into an IRS debit card rather than into a bank account.

I tried that already. The message I saw was that my COVID-19 stimulus check was sent to my old bank account. Now, I have to wait several weeks or months to receive a paper check in the mailbox.

According to the IRS website, once the deposit has been made, there is no other resource to update another bank account until the tax payer files their taxes during the next tax year and enters the new bank account information then.

The link you mentioned might allow someone who has not yet received the stimulus payment, many weeks later, to enter the IRS website and verify or if necessary, update their bank account information.

I would like to also add that the EDD debit card works just like any other bank issued debit card. It's accepted by any retailer, gas station, restaurant, etc.

I don't know about the EDD organizations in other states, but here in California, the debit card is issued by Bank of America. Again, I'd like to mention that this card can only accept deposits from the unemployment office. Once you use up all the money on the card, you will have to wait until the unemployment office sends another deposit during the next period of unemployment weeks.

Any changes can be easily performed by the recipient logging into his/her account. And yes... there's an app for that as well. The debit card number never changes and remains the same even after the recipient lands a new job.

The only way a card number will change, is if the recipient reports a lost or stolen card. The same method all banks and credit card companies do when a member's card is lost or stolen.

The IRS should really take the time to upgrade their methods of depositing tax refunds and other Government stimulus so that the majority of us don't have to get the run-around trying to figure out if funds have been deposited or not. I think the debit card feature is the best method overall to ensure that the tax payer knows where their money is. A new IRS webpage can be created specifically for card holders so that they don't have to get lost within the vast realm of the main IRS website as what most of us have been accustomed to since the Internet was invented.

How can I change my banking direct deposit information after I have filed my return?

Did you already e-file?  If you did NOT e-file you can go to the FILE section and change how you want to receive your refund.

Once a return has been accepted by the IRS you cannot change how you want to receive your refund.

Yes

How can I change my banking direct deposit information after I have filed my return?

@ArethaOldham You posted just one word---"yes" to a thread that has 89 replies in it.  We do not know what you are saying "yes" to.  Earlier in the thread someone asked if the person posting had e-filed--were you trying to say yes to that?  If you are asking about changing banking information, you cannot change your banking information after you e-filed.  If your refund goes to a wrong or closed account, it will be rejected by the the bank and go back to the IRS.  Then the IRS will mail a check to the address on your tax return.  If this is not the information you need, then please click "Reply" and ask a COMPLETE question that someone can understand.

TurboTax does not store your bank information.

Once a tax return has been filed the bank information cannot be changed.

When you file the 2020 federal tax return you can enter the bank routing and account number for a direct deposit of a federal tax refund in the File section of the TurboTax program.
