Hi there, I previously filed my 2016 taxes with a different program... How do I re-file with the government, and how do I use TurboTax to help with my re-filing?

Hi there, I previously filed my 2016 taxes with a different program... How do I re-file with the government, and how do I use TurboTax to help with my re-filing?

First, never re-file a tax return, in the sense of filing two original Forms 1040. Once you have filed a 1040 for a year, it is game over; never send the IRS a second return.

If you find that you have made an error or omission, you will want to amend your tax return, using Form 1040X. TurboTax can provide help in completing and filing Form 1040X. However, since you originally filed using non-TurboTax software, you will have to re-create that original tax return in TurboTax 2016. When you are satisfied that you have created an exact copy of your original return, only then can you begin the amendment process.

You can purchase prior year TurboTax products, if you have not already done so, through this link:

TurboTax Prior Years' Products

You can obtain detailed instructions about amending your tax return here:

How to amend a return you already filed

Please be aware that prior year TurboTax Online products are not available; you will complete this entire process using one of our CD-download products. Also, amended returns cannot be e-filed. Your completed Form 1040X, signed, and with all changed forms and schedules attached, must be mailed to the IRS.
