No. Once the payment has been made, it cannot be reversed. If a payment has not been made, only scheduled, it can be canceled. For more information please click the link below.

Hi I accidently paid a payment when i wanted to wait until the due date am I able to reverse the payment

The IRS would not accept my electronic  tax  payment as they lost my last year's return and could not confirm my AGI.  Thus the State of Illinois also would not accept my tax payment which I paid $25 for.  I could not find instructions for getting my $25 back.  Can you help

You would need to reach out to the IRS directly to start to confirm they haven't received your return and for them to advise you on the next steps. To reach an agent quicker, please follow the steps included below.

You would also need to reach out to the State of Illinois to advise on the same.  To reach the Illinois Department of Revenue, please see the link here.

IRS: 800-829-1040

Hours: 7:00 AM - 7:00 PM, local time

Monday-Friday

  • Listen to each menu before making the selection.
  • First choose your language. Press 1 for English.
  • Then do NOT choose the first choice re: "Refund", or it will send you to an automated phone line.
  • Instead, press 2 for "personal income tax".
  • Then press 1 for "form, tax history, or payment".
  • Then press 3 "for all other questions."
  • Then press 2 "for all other questions."  It should then transfer you to an agent.

Or, you can visit your local IRS Office
