It may be telling you what you owe IN ADDITION to what you may have owed on the original return.

The 1040X (amended return) shows the DIFFERENCE between the original and the amended return.

The 1040X always assumes the original has processed, since an amended return may be filed years after the original return was submitted.

If the 1040X shows tax due, that is the additional tax that must be paid by April 15th or with the amended return.

well is there a way for you to view my original document and then my amended document to see if they look correct?  I have had 1099r the previous 2 years and had to pay quite a bit of money in taxes for early withdrawal. the only difference this year is the allowable deductible amount per person

hello

Did you file an original return?  You do not amend unless you need to correct the first return that was Accepted.  The Amended return assumes you got the first original refund or paid any tax due.

No, no one can view your returns but you.  And if you amended, the Amended return replaces the original return.  The online version only saves the last one done.

I filed and submitted online and it was accepted then had to amend my return and it said to file paper file, which do I do

Ok so your first return was accepted.  I thought you meant you amended before submitting the first return.  Did the first return have a Tax due?

You will still get the first refund or need to pay the original tax due.  Then the amended return is only for the difference you get back or owe.  In fact you should not even amend until the first return has fully processed and you get the first refund or your tax due payment has cleared.  And make sure the original refund or tax paid shows up on the amended return.  You can confirm this by printing your amendment and looking at the 1040X. Line 18 should be your original refund amount and line 22 should be your additional refund.  If you paid on your original return it will be on line 16.  If there is an amount owed with the amendment, it will be on line 20.

You have to include a check for a tax due when you mail the amended return.  Do not use any vouchers that may print out.  If you have a refund they will mail you a check.  They don’t do Direct Deposit for refunds.
