For numerous years, Federal would wind up rejecting my return and make me submit them by mail. The reason given was a problem with one of my dependents. We had adopted our children from foster care, so we thought the bio parent was still trying to claim and causing the problem. Well, it turns out I just discovered why - I screwed up. I transposed two digits on one of my children's ss# and I've done it for years. IRS never explained why and not all years did they reject. When we would mail them in, they were accepted. I only figured this out because of a state tax discrepancy for 4 years ago came up and the state thought they deserved more money.
What do I do?? I've used TurboTax desktop every year. This has happened since 2007!!!

if the IRS/state did not change any of the returns you filed with the bad SSN then there's nothing to fix. if they did you can only amend 2017-2019 to decrease the amount you paid or increase your refund. Prior years are closed unless you owe more. for 2020 go to the dependent's worksheet and correct the SSN. then you should be able to e-file
Thanks. With us being retired, our income and number of children over the years, the $ owed/return didn't change for federal. The problem now is the state reconciling the exemptions to what the IRS adjusted, without telling us. Our record of account from IRS adjusted off the child with the wrong ss#.
What's the best way to amend 2017-2019? Do i have to reinstall those turbotax installs?
