Filed Jointly Last Year Filing Single Now

Help. Last year my wife and I filed jointly under her bank account. This year we have separated and I filed single and used my bank account numbers. However when I checked on the status of my stimulus payment, it said it was being deposited into her bank account. I didn't get the date of when the stimulus was being deposited until after I had filed my 2020 returns. What do I do?

You should contact the bank and make sure your name is not on the account.

If you're not on the account, your check should be rejected by the bank.

Even though we filled jointly under her account? It was only her bank account to begin with.

Yes, the following is the normal process.  The bank should reject the funds and send them immediately back to the IRS.  At that time they may reconcile with your 2020 tax return information for re-deposit or it could be turned into a paper check that will be mailed to your address on the 2020 tax return.

You can try to contact the IRS, but be prepared because it's difficult at this time.

  • Calling is extremely time consuming right now. If you want to try, call very early or very late based on the times below.
    • January - April  800-829-1040
      • Customer service representatives are available Monday through Friday, 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. local time, unless otherwise noted.
      • Telephone service wait times can average 15 minutes. Some telephone service lines may have longer wait times.
      • Telephone service wait times are higher on Monday and Tuesday
  • You can try to Contact the Local IRS Office using this link.

How long of a process will that be? Will I be notified of this happening? I'm not sure what is going on

@DianeW777  gave you excellent advice. It could take you about an hour or so because of wait times.

When contacting the IRS be sure to get the agents name and ID number.  If you have to call back that will be very important.

I recommend trying to contact a local office.
