Hello community. Here's my dilemma:
a) received an IND-031-04 error after Federal filing. I quadruple checked the AGI, which was originally correct, and re-sent, only to be rejected again. It seems I have to paper file Federal returns.
b) I then have New York State returns to file, however, NYS requires electronic filing linked to an approved Federal filing, and I apparently cannot paper file the Turbotax-completed NYS return. There is a note in Turbotax about this.
Question: Doe this mean I have to complete the NYS return on another e-file program approved by NYS, which means entering everything (everything) again?
Thanks for any thoughts you might have!

If it was rejected for AGI—-be aware that many 2020 returns took so long for the IRS to process that your 2020 AGI might not be in the IRS system. Try using zero instead.
If filing with zero is rejected then file again but select the option that you did not file last year. The IRS does not see that question and it will allow you to e-file with no AGI question.

If that does not work and you still cannot e-file, then print, sign, and mail your tax return.
If you have to mail federal you have to mail NY too
New York prefers e-filed returns, but there are certain circumstances that make it necessary for you to file your NY return by mail and the state DOES allow mailed returns. If you could not or did not e-file your federal return then your NY return cannot be e-filed. It has to be mailed. It is not possible to e-file any state return if the federal return was not e-filed and accepted by the IRS.
