Hi all!
I had a client contact me to tell me that they received an IRS letter stating their extension request was not approved because it wasn't filed timely. A little history for you here - this is a client who resides in Louisiana, in East Baton Rouge parish. Louisiana was under the extended due date deadline of 6/15/2021 because of the severe winter weather in the state. We were told by our tax software provider that if an extension needed to be efiled, we would have to efile it by 5/17/2021 (the extended due date for the rest of the country), and after that date up to 6/15/2021 would need to be filed on paper. We only filed a handful of paper extensions, this client being one of them. We have our postmarked receipt from the post office showing it was postmarked 6/15/2021 and that the IRS received it several days later. Now the client did not provide me with a copy of this letter they received, and they apparently threw it away already. I can clearly see that this client qualifies for the extension based upon their address and residing in Louisiana, so I want to type up a letter that they can send in to respond to this denial so that the IRS can rectify the error before they file their tax return later this year. Only issue is I do not know where to send the response to seeing as I don't have the original IRS notice!
Can anyone provide any help here? For something so simple I am spending way too much time on this :). I have already spent time on the internet looking for a sample letter that would state this denial, but I can't find one, which is honestly a bit odd!
