E-File Rejected

Hi, I filed my 2024 return with TurboTax software, but my federal and state (IL) e-files were rejected. I discovered that two numbers on a dependent's SSN were mistakenly transposed.

I don't understand what some of the errors mean. It's stating that one of the qualifying children was listed as a spouse on another return, which is simply not true. I don't understand what IND-517-02 is saying. Can all these errors be attributed to the mistake in the SSN?

Please advise, how can I fix my return, and where do I need to look in the software?

Please find the codes below:

SEIC-F1040-501-02 - The Social Security number and the last name of the qualifying child for the earned income credit (EIC) do not match what the IRS has in its records.

SEIC-F1040-509-04 - Each 'QualifyingChildSSN' that has a value on Schedule EIC (Form 1040), must not be equal to the Spouse SSN on another accepted return for the same tax year. Visit www.irs.gov/identity-theft-fraud-scams/identity-theft-dependents for additional information. To electronically file with this duplicate condition, an Identity Protection Personal Identification Number (IP PIN) will be required. If you wish to get an IP PIN and you don't already have an account on IRS.gov, then you must register to validate your identity. Please visit www.irs.gov/getanippin for further information and resubmit your return with an IP PIN.

R0000-504-02 - The name or Social Security number for a dependent on your return doesn't match IRS records

IND-517-02 - 'DependentSSN' in the return must not be the same as Primary or Spouse SSN on another return where Primary or Spouse have not indicated that they could be claimed as a dependent on someone else's return. Visit www.irs.gov/iden[product key removed]-scams/iden[product key removed]dents for additional information.

It's possible that the SSN that you typed belongs to someone that filed a tax return. Fix the SSN, check your other dependents SSNs, and resubmit your return. If it gets rejected again with the same error, then the issue may be with one of your other dependents. In that case, you'd need to mail your return.

E-File Rejected

Hi,

Thank you so much for your response. I did have a follow-up question. To be clear and for context, the return I attempted to file, as mentioned in the first post, was my parents' and not my individual return:

I discovered that when my sister had filed her taxes in 2023 to declare some money she had spent from her Pell grant for non-education expenses, she had not listed herself as a dependent since our parents did not file taxes that year (i.e., TurboTax asked her if anyone will claim her as dependent in 2023, and she selected no since my parents had not intended to file at the time).

I'm assuming that's what may be causing at least one of the errors to show up, since she is now listed as a main filer who is not dependent. In actuality, she is. My parents also have to file their 2022 and 2023 taxes as well (though federal is not required since they made under the minimum, we were not aware that for Illinois, any income must be declared). For now, I've filed for an extension for my parents' federal state return this year.

Should I aim to amend my sister's 2023 tax return first, file my parents' 2024 tax return, and finally file their 2022 and 2023 forms? Or, is there another way I should be approaching this? Thank you in advance.

You don't have to wait to file your parents' 2024 return, you can file it anytime as each year is processed separately. Regarding ‌taxes for 2022‌, you can send them at any time.

For 2023, you should amend your sister's return first and then send your parents' return.

How do I amend my federal tax return for a prior year?
