After you file
Hi,
Thank you so much for your response. I did have a follow-up question. To be clear and for context, the return I attempted to file, as mentioned in the first post, was my parents' and not my individual return:
I discovered that when my sister had filed her taxes in 2023 to declare some money she had spent from her Pell grant for non-education expenses, she had not listed herself as a dependent since our parents did not file taxes that year (i.e., TurboTax asked her if anyone will claim her as dependent in 2023, and she selected no since my parents had not intended to file at the time).
I'm assuming that's what may be causing at least one of the errors to show up, since she is now listed as a main filer who is not dependent. In actuality, she is. My parents also have to file their 2022 and 2023 taxes as well (though federal is not required since they made under the minimum, we were not aware that for Illinois, any income must be declared). For now, I've filed for an extension for my parents' federal state return this year.
Should I aim to amend my sister's 2023 tax return first, file my parents' 2024 tax return, and finally file their 2022 and 2023 forms? Or, is there another way I should be approaching this? Thank you in advance.
