Daughter needs to amend her own return after it has been fully processed. She will need change her answer in MY INFO to the question that asked if she can be claimed as someone else's dependent.
Her mother has to file by mail No amount of waiting for the daughter to amend will help. Daughter has put her SSN into the system and the IRS will now reject any other e-file using that SSN. Mom has to print, sign and date her return in ink, and mail it in.
When you mail a tax return, you need to attach any documents showing tax withheld, such as your W-2’s or any 1099’s. Use a mailing service that will track it, such as UPS or certified mail so you will know the IRS/state received the return.
Federal and state returns must be in separate envelopes and they are mailed to different addresses. Read the mailing instructions that print with your tax return carefully so you mail them to the right addresses.
Thank you for your answer xmasbaby. I don't understand why the mom cannot re-efile after the daughters amended return is processed. The daughter has received her refund she'll be paying back a portion with the amended return.
It takes months for an amended return to be processed. And even then it will be longer before the duplicate use of SSN is removed. Sorry----this is a very common problem experienced by many parents of teenagers and college students who are inexperienced at filing tax returns. The remedy is for the mother to mail her tax return.
Basically, the core of IRS computer systems technology is 60 years old. Does that explain it?
In those days there were one third as many tax return filers and all were filed on paper.
