How long does it take for "Approval" after "Accepted"?

Accepted means your tax return is now in the government's hands and has passed the initial inspection (your verification info is correct, dependents haven't already been claimed by someone else, etc.).

After acceptance, the next step is for the government to approve your refund.

First,  they look for things like back taxes and unpaid child support. If they find any debts, they'll offset (reduce) your refund to cover the outstanding amount. Once they are satisfied that you have no outstanding debts, they will approve and then issue your refund.

Think of the e-filing/refund process along the lines of applying for a job; although the employer (government tax agency) has received (accepted) your job application, they still have to review (approve) your application before they grant you an interview (refund).

What does it mean when turbotax says my $ is on it's way

The best way to check your refund status and confirm if your money is on it's way, is through the IRS Where's My Refund? tool.  This will allow you to track your refund and get an estimated deposit date for your funds.

@mybabies1331 You should be checking the IRS WMR tool to see when your refund is actually approved.  Once approved, it should say refund sent along with a direct deposit date.

Turbo Tax will always say Accepted. It is not updated when the IRS or State sends your refund. Accepted only means the IRS or state verified your identity and accepted your return FOR PROCESSING. Once they accept your return then Turbo Tax is done with their part and doesn't get any updates on your refund.

If your return is Accepted then check IRS Where’s my Refund?  Read the top of the page.  The IRS refund lookup may be delayed.

@Keetah22

You posted on a thread that is more than 2 years old.   When you will get your refund now is not the same as it was during covid.

Once your federal return has been accepted by the IRS, only the IRS has any control.  TurboTax does not receive any updates from the IRS. Your ONLY source of information about your refund now is the IRS.

You need your filing status, your Social Security number and the exact amount  (line 35a of your 2022 Form 1040) of your federal refund to track your Federal refund:

To track your state refund:
