Can you provide a little more information as to what is happening?

You could not have e-filed if you did not enter the child's name, social security number and year of birth properly so the only thing on that list of possible errors that is affecting you is the last one. It's the incorrect entry of the advanced stimulus payment that you entered in the program that they are disagreeing with. They have the suggested your return to account for this data entry error.

Who is the message from?   Is this a message in TurboTax or is this a message from the IRS?   To be able to tell you exactly what you would need to do is whether or not your return has been e-filed and whether or not this is from TurboTax or the IRS.

What the message is telling you is that the Recovery Rebate Credit was removed from your return for one or more of the following reasons.   To figure out where the problem is located you need to check the areas referenced above.

  • One or more of the individuals claimed or qualifying dependent is missing a 'last name".   Go back to each of the individuals claimed and your qualifying dependents and make sure that all have the last name entered.
  • Check to make sure that you have entered a Social Security Number for each individual claimed or qualifying dependent.
  • Check the birth dates for each of the qualifying dependents.   One of the qualifying dependent's age exceeds the age limit.  Make sure all of the birth dates are correct.
  • Finally, what is your Adjusted Gross Income (AGI)?   If your AGI is more than:
    • $75,000 for single or
    • $150,000 for married filing joint or
    • $112,500 for head of household
  • you are not entitled to the Recovery Rebate Credit and TurboTax has removed it from your return.

If you are getting the message from TurboTax, once you review each of these areas and make any corrections, it should take care of the problem.  However, if the issue is the final one, then you are not entitled to the credit.

If this message is from the IRS, once you determine which of the issues exist, respond with more information and we can help you with what your next steps are.
