Change to taxable amount of Social Security

I entered all information for a couple (both retired) and re-verified information before filing.  Couple also re-verified information.  They have now received a letter from the IRS stating they have updated the taxable portion of their SS amount.  We always update before entering any tax information and this return was completed on March 21, 2020.  Why would the system not have calculated the correct taxable portion? Thank you!

Either you entered the wrong amount of their Social Security (SSA-1099Box 5)or the IRS changed the taxable amount of some other income like their 1099R.  And by increasing their taxable income made more of their Social Security taxable.

The letter should say what they changed.  A common thing is they increased the income for 1099R income.  Either you missed entering one or you reported the wrong taxable amount on line 4b or 4d.   Or it showed up on the wrong line 4b or 4d so the IRS missed it.

Did they get a CP2000 ?    If so which tax year ?   And the taxable SS is a direct result of missing income as a rule ... so review the missing info that is listed on the notice.
