Yes, if you didn't claim the credit on your original tax return, you will need to file an Amended U.S. Individual Income Tax Return, Form 1040-X. The IRS will not calculate the 2020 Recovery Rebate Credit for you if you did not enter any amount on your original tax return.

How to File an Amended Tax Return with the IRS - TurboTax ...
Hi, Thank you.
I am not seeing how to claim this on the 1040X through Intuit Turbo Tax
If you were not eligible for either or both of the Economic Impact Payments, you may still be eligible for the Recovery Rebate Credit since it’s based on your 2020 tax return information. Recovery Rebate Credit
To claim the credit on form 1040X:.
Hi, I'm still not seeing where to claim the Recovery Rebate Credit on 2020's 1040-X. I didnt file my original return with Turbotax but would like to file my amended return with Turbotax. Where exactly under the Deductions can I find the Recovery Rebate Credit for 1040-X (provided a screenshot) - I dont see it listed under COVID-19 relief credits either? thank you
Apply for the rebate credit under Federal Review, not Deductions and Credits.
Your income should have been entered so TurboTax knows your AGI.
What do I need to do in order to receive my recovery rebate credit? I never received my first stimulus which should have been $1200 please help me with this matter
If you did not receive your first and/or second stimulus payment or if the amount received is not correct, you can claim it on your 2020 tax return as the Recovery Rebate Credit.
In TurboTax Online, to claim the Recovery Rebate credit please do the following:
The third stimulus will be claimed on your 2021 tax return.
Do we still claim the third stimulus payment under Federal Review in turbotax?
@az148 Are you asking about a 2020 return or a 2021 return? You do not enter anything at all about the 3rd stimulus on a 2020 tax return. The 3rd stimulus was a credit for a 2021 tax return.
@xmasbaby0 Yes, referring to the 2021 tax return. do we claim the third stimulus on the 2021 return that we will be filing in a couple months? under which form/field?
Since none of us have seen the 2021 software or the 2021 forms we cannot answer you at this time with any specific directions as to exactly where in the software you will enter information about the 3rd stimulus. We know that there will be the chance to claim the credit for it if you did not receive it. Be patient and wait for the forms and software. You have plenty of time.
It is on the same line 30 on the form 1040 for the 2021 return so I expect the program to have the same section like the 2020 program had asking how much of the third stimulus you got in advance.
I am filing a amended return for my daughter to change two things. When I did the return for her originally it was noted that she can be claimed on our taxes but 2020 is the first year we could not claim her but I did not change the status before filing the taxes. I completed the amended return changing the status to indicate she can not be claimed as a dependent on anybody else's tax return. She is also eligible for the recovery rebate credit but when I enter it in the refundable credits section line 15 it list $1,800 in column A and then automatically inputs -$1,800 in Column B on line 18 for a net of $0. This is not right it should be $1,800 as she is eligible. Anybody got an idea what I am doing wrong? Thank You.
Sounds like you made the changes before starting the amendment process ... you can either fight with it or use what you have as a templet fill one in manually to make the correction since you have to mail in the return anyway. https://www.irs.gov/pub/irs-pdf/f1040x.pdf
Undo the amendment, undo the changes and then start the amendment process and make the changes again...
If you started amending your federal return by accident and would like to cancel the amendment, follow this process to correctly "unamend" your federal return:
State Amendments
The best way to "unamend" your state return is to go through your state return from the beginning and keep your eyes peeled for amend-related screens or questions.
The amend question usually appears right at the beginning or towards the end of the state interview (never in the middle).
Correct any entries that have to do with an amended return, e.g.:
If you still can't get rid of your state amendment form, try clearing your state return and starting over.
