I NEED A COPY OF MY W-2  (or 1099)

W-2's come from employers.  There is not a federal or national website that provides W-2’s.

TurboTax does not have a copy of your W-2—the Wage & Tax Statement—issued to you by your employer, (nor does TurboTax have copies of your 1099’s).   You should always save those documents for your own records. You could ask the employer(s) for copies or you can get a copy from Social Security (for a fee of $62).

If you saved a pdf of your completed tax return, the worksheets will show the W-2 information you entered, but not the actual W-2.

You can get a wage and income transcript from the IRS:  It will not show the actual W-2, 1099’s, etc, but will show the income information the IRS received.  It will not, however, show your state information. It will only show the federal information.

Or you can pay the IRS $30 for an actual copy of your tax return which will include copies of your W-2’s

And….SAVE YOUR OWN W-2!  TURBOTAX DOES NOT SAVE IT FOR YOU.  TurboTax will not have a copy of it in your account and will not have an image even if you snapped a photo or imported it.  It is up to you to save it for your own records as stated on the back of the W-2.

Copies of your tax documents are not stored in your TurboTax account.  The easiest and most cost effective way to get a copy of a W-2 is to request a copy from the employer who issued it to you.

If that option is not available, you may request one from the Social Security Administration (SSA).   Be aware that there is a fee if the request is non-Social Security related, and the request has to be made in writing.   See Get a W-2 Copy from SSA for the address and payment options.

You can get a wage and income transcript OR a tax return transcript from the IRS, for free.  These transcripts will give you the FEDERAL tax information reported by your employer, but will not include state or local tax information.   See Get IRS Tax Records & Transcripts to request a transcript. These are available instantly if you have an IRS online account.

If you filed a paper tax return and attached Form W-2 to your return, you can order a copy of the entire tax return, including the W-2(s) you attached, for a fee.  The fee is waived for those impacted by federal disasters.  However, the process can take up to 75 calendar days.   For more information on this option, see Mailing Form 4506, Tax Return Copy Request.

Keep tax forms and supporting paperwork (and/or screenshots) related to your income, expenses, home, and investments for at least three years after filing.  Tax Document Recordkeeping
