Can I just transfer the results of my Federal tax return by hand on to my state return form?

Since retirement, our tax returns are simple, so can I just take the results from our federal return and do do my own state return?

Sure, you can do that. And you should be able to get your state forms for free from your state tax website, or some states have fill-in forms that you can efile through the state.
