Greetings,
I am a US citizen. My wife and I got married back in 2022 and since she cannot come to the US yet I've been filing my US tax (2023 & 2024) under married filed separately listing N.R.A as my spouse. I was just talking with a CPA friend of mine and she suggested I could apply for an ITIN for her so I could receive some tax benefit. However, I have a couple of questions:
1. She works in Hong Kong and receives income. Will she need to file a 1040 when it comes to US tax time? I'm not familiar with HK system so I don't know when they'll receive their equivalent of our W-2.
2. Do I need to adjust my filing status for my 2023 & 2024 IF my wife successfully receive her ITIN?
3. Is there other things/pros/cons I need to consider about regarding her getting an ITIN?
