Amending tax return: amend return button does not work

I paid for Turbotax in 2024 and filed my 2023 tax return. I have just become aware that I need to amend my return. When I logged in to Turbtotax and clicked on my tax documents, I found the button that allows me to amend last year's return. When I click the button that says "amend using Turbotax online" nothing happens. I am not sure why it is not working. Do I need to purchase Turbotax again in 2025 to be able to amend last year's return? What am I missing?

On the very first screen after you log in, it asks you to start. When scrolling down further, it says Your tax returns & documents. You can expand that, click on 2023, expand Amend, and the button is there.

How to amend my return?

I can see the button. When I click the button, nothing happens. I have clicked it multiple times. I have logged in with different internet browsers. The button simply does not work. My wife is a programmer and she checked it out. She says the button is "dead."

To access your prior year online tax returns sign onto the TurboTax website with the User ID you used to create the account - https://myturbotax.intuit.com/

Start the 2024 online tax return by entering some personal information then click on Tax Home on the left side of the screen.

On the Tax Home webpage -

Scroll down to the section Your tax returns & documents.  Click on the Year 2023 and Click on Amend (change) return

If the link to amend is not active, clear cache and cookies on your web browser.  If that does not correct the problem then change your web browser to one of these that you are not currently using, Google Chrome, Mozilla Firefox, Microsoft Edge

Unfortunately this is still not resolved. I have tried using both Safari and Chrome.

Same problem. 2022 and 2023 tax returns were e-filed with TurboTax and accepted. The "Amend using TurboTax Online" button is not working for both years.

Same problem here. My online TurboTax for 2023 "amend" process goes in an infinite loop.

I purchased the desktop version of 2024 TurboTax Deluxe thinking may it would let me amend 2023. Now I find out I must have the 2023 desktop version of TurboTax.

The On Demand Tax Guidance says "You used TurboTax Online to prepare your previous year return. Follow these instruction to get a download of the version you need.

The link leads me to nothing.....just a bunch of complaining posts. Where am I supposed to get the 2023 download without paying for it again?

I have spent TWO HOURS on this just trying to complete a 1040-X with a simple amendment. If I could do it by hand, I would! I am just not an accountant. This is painful and unnecessary. Why can't it just WORK like it's supposed to?

Thanks......kind of sort of....

@silverleaf1 If you purchased one of the 2023 online editions you will need to contact TurboTax support so they can push a 2023 desktop installation file to your download account at no charge.

See this TurboTax support FAQ for contacting support - https://ttlc.intuit.com/turbotax-support/en-us/help-article/account-management/contact-turbotax/L2y9ZKpQB_US_en_US

Support can also be reached by messaging them on these pages https://www.facebook.com/turbotax/ and https://twitter.com/TeamTurboTax

I had this same problem, and after spending 3 sessions on the phone for a total of over 3 hours with 3 different Turbo Tax experts (the last one being extremely helpful and effective - shout out to James), I have an answer. If you need to amend your 2023 tax return, and you used the Turbo Tax online version, you CANNOT amend your return online. It is impossible. I was told that any amendment prior to 2025 must use the desktop Turbo Tax version for the year you are amending. For me, that meant that I needed to purchase the 2023 desktop version of Turbo Tax. This is not something I ever would have found out if not for calling a Turbo Tax expert multiple times. Now, I am left seeing if I can actually figure out how to amend my return (especially without having to input again all of my information. Good luck, out there. You'll need it,

@SameSameButDifferent   If you paid for the Online version you can ask them to give you the Desktop program (unless you used the Online Free edition).

To amend you need to download the tax data file ending in .tax2023 and open it in the program.

Save the tax file, scroll down to I need my tax file to Amend

As of Feb 2026, this issue still exists.

I am trying to amend my 2024 returns, I see the "Amend my return" button online when I login, but teh button does nothing when clicked.

Is downloading the desktop version (for Mac in my case) the only solution here? If I do that, will there be any consideation when I file 2025 tax returns later?

If you end up having no option but to download, Contact TurboTax Support and use 'Billing' as your issue.  Explain your situation and you should get a free download.

Here's some info on your issue to try:

  • Clear Browser Data: Clear your cache and cookies for "all time" in your browser settings, then try again.
  • Switch Browsers/Devices: Try using a different web browser, such as Google Chrome, Mozilla Firefox, or Microsoft Edge.
  • Use Incognito Mode: Open an incognito or private window, sign in to your TurboTax account, and attempt to click the button.
  • Verify Account: Ensure you are using the exact same account you used to file the original 2024 return.
  • Desktop Switch: If the online version continues to fail, you may need to use the desktop version of the software to process the amendment.

@MarilynG and @prasadnadig,

Just wanted to let you both know that I, too, was given these instructions from one of TT’s “experts” - trying a different browser, clearing my cache, switching from online to desktop - all without success. I think it’s an issue that whatever product manager is in charge of this product needs to address.

PLEASE STOP BLAMING YOUR USERS.

The desktop button doesn't work.  Tried mult browsers, cleared cookies/cache, etc.  Called support.  What we ended up trying and this worked:  You can amend it on a phone browser.  The button works on the phone, but not on the desktop version.  Frustrating, but at least it's a work around.

Do not bother with the button.

Just go into the return, then:

1. Click on Other Tax Situations

3. Under Other Tax Forms

4. Amend a Return, click on the start button.

But be very careful, starting the Amend process will potentially wipe out your old data. It sets the Refund window at the top (green if the IRS owes you money, red if you owe them money) to 0 and proceeds to log the changes from there. These will be reflected in the Refund window, reflecting the impact of your changes on the old filing.

IMPORTANT:

In order to keep a copy of your originally filed form (pre-amending), save a copy of it to some external drive, like a flash drive. Then you will be able to refer back to it if needed. (You will also be able to refer back to the original form if you save .pdf copies of your filing, but that won't allow you to access the data electronically, of course.)

I was referring to the DeskTop version, not the on-line.
