I just filed my son's Federal return and inadvertently failed to indicate that he would be claimed as a dependent on my return. His return was accepted. When I just went to file my own Federal return, it was rejected because I claimed him as a dependent and he did not indicate that he would be claimed by me. I went to amend his return (since its been accepted) and I cannot see where it is that I can change his dependent status. There is a Personal Info & Dependents section but it does not provide an option to update that item. This is a big deal because I have education expenses and 529 plan earnings on my return. Appreciate any assistance. Thanks.

The question about whether he can be claimed as a dependent appears in My Info. If you accidentally said that he could not be claimed, you have to click edit by his name in My Info and go back through the screens slowly and carefully to that question and change it to say he can be claimed.
Meanwhile......sorry ... but even if you amend his return, you cannot e-file this year. His Social Security number has been put into the system and it will not be corrected in time for you to ever e-file this year. Your return claiming your son must be filed by mail. Print it, sign and date it in ink, and mail it in. Expect a longer wait for a mailed return to be processed.
When you mail a tax return, you need to attach any documents showing tax withheld, such as your W-2’s or any 1099’s. Use a mailing service that will track it, such as UPS or certified mail so you will know the IRS/state received the return.
Federal and state returns must be in separate envelopes and they are mailed to different addresses. Read the mailing instructions that print with your tax return carefully so you mail them to the right addresses.
Click on the Personal Info tab. Click on Edit next to your name. In section #3, mark the box that Someone else can claim me on their tax return

You are correct that you will need to amend his return, but even amending it will not correct it for you to e-file your return.
Your return will need to be filed by mail.
For his return, return to personal information and click edit next to his name. Once you click continue, you will get this screen.
Thank you.
Thank you!
