In that case, if you were self-employed, meaning you did not receive a W-2 from an employer where they withheld Federal Income Taxes, Social Security and Medicare Taxes from your wages, and your income was over $400 for both 2015 and 2016 you are required to file a tax return to report the self-employment income.

For 2016 you can use the TurboTax Freedom edition to report your income and expenses from self-employment.

If you are eligible you can use the TurboTax Freedom edition which is free to file both a federal and state tax return.  The Freedom edition is a full featured personal tax program and on a separate website from the TurboTax online editions.

To qualify for free 2016 federal and state tax returns in Freedom Edition, you'll need to meet at least one of these requirements:

  • A maximum 2016 adjusted gross income (AGI) of $33,000; or
  • You qualify for the Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC); or
  • You served as active duty military (including Reservists and National Guard) with a maximum 2016 AGI of $64,000 (you'll also need a military-issued W-2).

For tax year 2015 you would need to purchase, download and install one of the TurboTax 2015 desktop editions on your personal computer.  Go to this website for the 2015 desktop editions - https://turbotax.intuit.com/personal-taxes/past-years-products/

A 2015 tax return can only be printed and mailed, it cannot be e-filed.

I have to file,my taxes for 2015 and 2016 for my financial aid for school,I have not filed because of not making enough moneySo I thought .However financial laid is requiring me to file

All I have is bank statements

If you had no income to report in 2015 or 2016 then there is no reason to file a tax return nor would you be required to file a tax return.
For financial aid you can provide a Verification of Non-filing Letter from the IRS for the non-filing of a tax return.
