Additional payment on taxes question

My husband owes taxes roughly $500 for 2021 and $1,000 for 2022. He is on a payment plan and has already filed, he owed none for 2024 so the amount he got back went to what was owed to 2021. We decided to do an additional payment of $1,000 toward what he owes for those 2 years. This was done a couple weeks ago. Going on the IRS website, the payment shows still as pending but it also shows 2021’s balance as info not available at this time. And then 2022’s balance is the same. My question is if 2021’s balance was $500 and we paid an additional payment of $1,000 will the other 500$ be applied to 2022’s owed taxes? When making the payment it didn’t allow us to choose a specific tax year otherwise I would’ve done the exact amount for 2021 and make a separate payment for 2022.
