@Ladarishantel5 Each tax year has to be filed separately.  You cannot combine income from two different tax years on the same tax return.  So ..... if you did that....you must amend the incorrect return you filed AFTER it has been fully processed.  Do not try to amend until the IRS has finished processing the original tax return that you filed.   When you amend---you must remove the 2022 income from the return.   That will cause the amount of your refund or tax due to change.

And......if you do need to file a 2022 return ---- the only way to use TurboTax to do that now is to use the CD/download on a full PC or Mac, and mail in the 2022 return.

You cannot change the tax year.   The current online program is for 2023 only.   Only a 2023 return can be prepared online and only a 2023 return can be e-filed.

Online preparation and e-filing for 2020, 2021, and  2022 is permanently closed.

To file a return for a prior tax year

If you need to prepare a return for 2020, 2021, or 2022  you can purchase and download desktop software to do it, then print, sign,  and mail the return(s)

https://turbotax.intuit.com/personal-taxes/past-years-products/

You may also want to explore purchasing the software from various retailers such as Amazon, Costco, Best Buy, Walmart, Sam’s, etc.

Remember to prepare your state return as well—if you live in a state that has a state income tax.

When you mail a tax return, you need to attach any documents showing tax withheld, such as your W-2’s or any 1099’s.  Use a mailing service that will track it, such as UPS or certified mail so you will know the IRS/state received the return.

Federal and state returns must be in separate envelopes and they are mailed to different addresses.  Read the mailing instructions that print with your tax return carefully so you mail them to the right addresses.

Note:  The desktop software you need to prepare the prior year return must be installed/downloaded to a full PC or Mac.  It cannot be used on a mobile device.

If you are getting a refund, there is not a penalty for filing past the deadline.  If you owe taxes, the interest/penalties will be calculated by the IRS based on how much you owe and when they receive your return and payment. The IRS will bill you for this; it will not be calculated by TurboTax.

Amend your 2023 return.

You will have to amend, but you cannot do that yet.   The Form 1040X that you will need is not available until at least mid-February.   And....you have to wait for the IRS to fully process the incorrect return you e-filed.   If you amend too soon you will just cause more confusion with the IRS and delay it all.

In the same situation. So will we still get our refund for 2023 if we don’t amend or no?

I did combine incomes together on the same year smh. It’s my first time so it was a silly mistake, but I honestly didn’t get anything back from 2022 income. Mainly my refund was from w2s from 2023 and the actc and the eitc, so will i get my refund for those at all? Or will irs not issue my refund until i amend my taxes?

We can take this one step at a time.

The first thing to do is to file your 2022 taxes.

Now you will fav to amend your 2023 taxes.

If you want to make changes, or add a document to a tax return that has already been submitted you should follow these guidelines.

  • You must first wait until the initial return is completely processed.
  • You will have to use the same TurboTax account that you used for the original tax return.
  • Once you begin your amendment, you'll see your original return.
    • The refund calculator will start new at $0 and only reflect the changes in the refund or tax due
    • Only make changes to the areas of your return that need amending.
  • You have three years from the date you filed your return or two years after you paid the tax due (whichever is later) to file an amendment

Sign in to TurboTax

  1. On the home screen, scroll down to Your tax returns & documents and
  2. Select the year you want to amend
  3. Select Amend (change) return, then
  4. Amend using TurboTax Online
    1. If you're told to amend your return via TurboTax Desktop, follow the steps for TurboTax CD/Download below instead.
  5. On the screen OK, let's get a kickstart on your amended return, select the reason(s) you're amending and Continue.
  6. When you reach Here's the info for your amended federal return, select Start next to the info you need to change.
  7. Continue through the screens, make the changes you need to make, and carefully answer the remaining questions to finish amending your return.
