2020 Tax Year Return Rejected. What to do in 2022?

My 2020 tax year return was rejected by the IRS in April of 2021. My partner failed to tell me about the numerous emails Turbo Tax was sending. It's now April of 2022, and any links from those emails that would have helped fix the rejection just take me to the 2021 tax year turbo tax page. What can I do to fix this?

2020 Tax Year Return Rejected. What to do in 2022?

So your 2020 return was never filed---it was rejected and you did not know it?   And what do you mean by my "partner?"    Were you filing as Single or filing a joint return?   Were you legally married?   Most rejections were for incorrect AGI.  Since you cannot e-file a 2020 return now, AGI does not matter for filing 2020.   A 2020 return can only be filed by mail.   You need to print it, sign and date it in ink and mail it in.

You will be able to access the return you started by using the exact same account and user ID that you used when you started it.   But you can no longer use online software for any further changes.

Online tax preparation and e-filing for 2020 returns is now permanently closed.  Now it is too late to use online software or to e-file. If you have any changes/corrections at all to make to your 2020 return, you now have to complete it using desktop software, which you must download to a full PC or Mac  (not to a mobile device). Then you need to print, sign and mail it.

If you already paid for your online software you can ask customer support for a download of the desktop software.

They are available from 5 a.m. to 9 p.m. Pacific time Monday-Friday.

If you are getting a refund, there is no penalty for filing late.  If you owe tax due, then file and pay the amount due as shown on the Form 1040, but expect a bill later from the IRS for the penalty and interest you will owe.  Only the IRS will calculate this—TurboTax will not calculate it.

When you mail a tax return, you need to attach any documents showing tax withheld, such as your W-2’s or any 1099’s.  Use a mailing service that will track it, such as UPS or certified mail so you will know the IRS/state received the return.

Federal and state returns must be in separate envelopes and they are mailed to different addresses.  Read the mailing instructions that print with your tax return carefully so you mail them to the right addresses.

Each tax year is separate.   You can prepare and file a 2021 return--but in order to e-file you will have to say that you did not file 2020 or use zero as your 2020 AGI.

2020 Tax Year Return Rejected. What to do in 2022?

Thanks for your response.  One thing that would be helpful in preparing the 2020 return to re-submit would be the rejection code that was supposedly passed to TurboTax. I understand it's too late to e-file now, but that code could at least help me fix whatever was wrong in the first place.

Not sure if customer support can pull that up or not, but you can try asking them.
