Mine is the same. N calling irs was useless. But I was able to look up my tax transcript was sent for processing 9/14. The where’s my tool is not correct. I think it’s still using original stuff Bc nothing shows an amended return being issued yet.  That being said it’s well past the 20 weeks for processing we r in week 25 now for me. I’m hoping at this point before Xmas. Getting ridiculous. Fix your tool!

Online the IRS states that an amended return, if owed credit, will be returned to you in the same form as the original. Hence, if your original taxes you opted for a check by mail, then that is how you will receive you amended return and if your original was a direct deposit, then it will be. It notifies you when you finish th return somewhere at the end in either paperwork or where you did your taxes. Basically stating that the return style previously chosen cannot be changed on amended taxes.

No one can say for sure. Hopefully it will be soon but I would say you should have it by December

       I amended my 2016 tax return after discovering filing jointly would net a considerable additional refund. It was posted as received 11/22/2019, updated as adjusted 2/7/2020, with the status also stating;

"Your account was adjusted on 02/07/2020 Friday. Within three weeks, you will receive a notice that explains the adjustment."

My initial filing was for direct deposit. I didn't know what to expect, because the above statement doesn't provide information on what the outcome is. I assumed I would find out within the next 3 weeks. It was received, 2/10/2020, the check was in my mailbox, for those thinking that they will receive direct deposit, because the initial return was received as direct deposit.

The status has not changed in the system and still reads what I posted above.

    GOT IT!

6 July 22, the check and notice as to what was done arrived with interest, 2.5 yrs after the amendment was submitted and after an initial denial when it was finally reviewed about 1.5 yrs after submission and then an additional year after appealing, with info recovered directly from the IRS website.

I posted somewhere about my dilemma, having submitted an amended 2016 and 2017 tax return in Nov 2019, shortly after receiving a CP2000, stating I failed to report a cancelled loan and owed $2400 for the 2017 tax year. The 2016 amendment went through without a problem within the 16 weeks allotted, just before the pandemic shut down in March 2020, the 2017 amendment was side lined apparently waiting on the results of the CP2000, which was resolved after a year and multiple resubmissions of waiver qualifying documents that the IRS appeared to be ignoring, as they reduced the amount twice before finally zeroing the 2017 debt.

I opted for a tax advocate when the option was offered after a year of waiting for the 2017 amendment and in my opinion it was a waste of time. I had even less knowledge as to what was going on for the 6 months the amendment was in their hands in Puerto Rico (I live in FL.) and during that time it was reassigned to another agent. They didn't keep their contact appointments that they set, or return calls in a timely manner in accordance with their own commitments. While in their possession, the main IRS body has no access to your account, so if the advocate can't be reached, you're just stuck. They were marginally to not helpful and eager to close the case after the refund was denied on the premise that my 2017 income was not earned. I explained that Turbotax calculated a return for a reason so there must be something.

I declined to have the case closed and opted for an appeal. Within a few minutes of searching the net, I discovered that I lived in a county in FL that was considered a disaster area following hurricane Irma (turbotax asked about this) and that I could use either my 2016, or 2017 earned income to calculate my 2017 tax return. That is what turbo tax apparently corrected for. I sent the documentation from the IRS website in with the appeal around June-July 2021 and then again in March 2022 after not hearing anything and received a type written response in April 2022, stating my amendment should be completed in 3 mo from that date, which would be some time in June 2022, or they would contact me with another update.

It was long awaited, but worth it. In the future, I'd address a dual tax problem, in order of priority and would probably avoid a tax advocate if one was offered. Much of the madness could have been avoided with simple notification stating the documents had been received as I logged a total of at least 4 resubmissions of documents they already had, that I was not sure about. That's not less than 6 submissions of tax documents that could have been kept to 2, if they had simply let me know they received them.

Your amended return will take up to 3 weeks after you mailed it to show up on the IRS system. Processing it can take up to 16 weeks:

Since we do not have any type of relationship with the company who originally prepared your return, it's hard to say for sure where the refund is going to go. If you do not want to contact the original preparer, I suggest you contact the IRS to confirm with them. Please click here for more details and information for how to prepare for a call to the IRS.

Hey I know this was from the past . But when you filed an amended federal return did you also do the state one as well ? I haven't got to mail my state one yet.  Could that be a reason for the delay on my amended federal return .?

@Lovely1  No. The fact that you have or haven't filed your state return has no bearing on the status of your amended federal return.

Three weeks after you mail your amendment, you can start tracking its status at the IRS Where's My Amended Return? site or by calling their automated number 1-866-464-2050.

Please note that it can take 12-16 weeks to process your amendment.

The child support department would have to pay the money back if it belonged to you. I'm not sure how long it will take you to get payment, but normally it is soon after you receive a letter saying your will receive it.

With the virus going on , when will they let out more info for those who are amending their return . What I mean is I see so many post about returns but not once did they ever mentioned anything about amended returns.  Like I've been waiting for mines for awhile now . Hoping it would go by sooner with this virus going on . But instead they only give out info for returns . What about those who did an amended return? Do we still have to wait long for it to be adjusted ? Even when I check "where's my return" for the e-file I originally filed says they receive it and checking on it . But I already received my return from the original e-file , then I had to amend to add my daughter becuase no one was claiming her.  So what is really going on ??
