My original return had a refund but I made a clerical error and had to amend my return. The amended return shows I owe the IRS. Does this mean that the original return refund amount I was to receive is no longer correct and I now owe the IRS? I'm confused on this process because I was due a refund for child tax credit

Was your original return filed and accepted?

You will still get the refund from the first original return.  In fact you should not even amend until the first return has fully processed and you get the first refund.

Then the amended return is only for the difference you get back or owe.  I think the cover sheet shows what the original return WOULD have been if you did it right the first time.

Go by the actual 1040X.  Line 18 should be your original refund amount and line 22 should be your additional refund.  If you paid on your original return it will be on line 16.  If there is an amount owed with the amendment, it will be on line 20.

If you have a tax due, do not send the 1040V.  Just include a check with the 1040X.  Ignore the 1040V.  That is for the original return or what the original return would have been if it didn’t need correcting.  Don’t pay the amount on the 1040V.  Pay the amount on the actual 1040X.

Can you provide more details about the adjustment you are waiting on?   There are over 250 replies in this thread so it is unclear what your question is.

If your return has been adjusted, you may not even get a check.  Sometimes they determine that you owe money or there is no change.  Completed is the only time you will get a check.  This happened to me - the CPA that handled my brother's estate told me to file an amended return as he determined that I was owed another $1,000.  Well it turned out that I owed the IRS money and the CPA was totally in left field over this.  It was impossible for me to get through to the IRS - the message always said to call back at another time or when I finally did get through to someone, they had no details.

That makes no sense. TurbTax is what I use to do all my Taxes, including Amended. My Amended was done right, as I know what I was supposed to receive when doing it, and at the end of the Amended Tax review, TurboTax and myself were CORRECT.

I don't rely on CPA's to do my taxes. They get overwelmed and make mistakes. It was up to you to know what you were owed. You are at fault, not the CPA.

So stressed an worn down with all this. Like most of you came here looking for possible answers...  Here's the stats that I have

    Irs received. 9-29-2020

    Adjusted 4-23-2021

As of today 5-14-2021 Nothing showing in transcript and have recieved no communication from IRS.

Does anybody have any idea of when we might know something?

Unfortunately, only the IRS is going to be able to give you any information on your tax return.

Here is a link to a thread that details how to go through the automated phone prompts to reach a live representative.  The steps may save you some frustration.   You can also search for a local IRS office in your area.  It may be easier to contact a local representative than using the main phone number.    You can use the ''make an appointment'' option even if you have no intention of going to the office, but that may get you a live person on the phone that can provide you some info.   They have access to the same information.     @Clsmws
