CASUALTY LOSS
It is difficult to claim a casualty loss because you have to meet a tough threshold. Only the amount of a casualty loss that is OVER 10% of your adjusted gross income can be counted toward your itemized deductions, and even then you must subtract $100 from that amount. If your loss was covered by insurance, it is very unlikely that the amount of your deductible would be enough to count as a deduction. If you want to enter your casualty loss, go to the Federal>Deductions and Credits> Other Deductions and Credits>Casualties and Thefts.

There were price increases to the products throughout the season, so it's possible you saw some earlier season pricing and still had those costs in mind. The current price for Self-Employed Federal is $119.99 and State is correct at $44.99.

As a general rule, yes, U.S. citizens have to file a tax return with the IRS every year, irrespective of the fact that they may have lived or worked outside of the country for the year in question. The IRS taxes all “worldwide income” of American citizens, so it is of no import that a person’s employer is located in a foreign country or that the person was paid in a currency other than the U.S. dollar—overseas citizens still have to report their income to the IRS.

To enter that 1098-T form:
Open (continue) your return, if you're not already in it.
In TurboTax, select and search for 1098T and then select the Jump to link in the search results.
Answer any education questions that pop up (enrollment status, name of school, and so forth). If you land on the Education Expenses Summary screen, select Edit next to the student in question, then edit the tuition item.
At the Did you or your dependent(s) get a 1098-T? screen, answer Yes and continue.
After you enter your 1098-T, we'll ask about other expenses (books, supplies, equipment) and financial aid.

Yes, TurboTax Free Edition (and TurboTax Live Basic) are intended for
taxpayers with very simple returns that can fit on the new 1040 form without
any schedules.
If we detect that your tax situation requires expanded coverage,
like deductions for owning a home or self-employment income, we'll prompt you
to upgrade to a version that supports the forms you need so we can maximize
your tax deductions and ensure you file an accurate return.
Depending on what your tax situation was last year, you might
need to use new tax forms to claim the same deductions, credits, or forms of
income. Some of the situations that are now in TurboTax Deluxe and
TurboTax Live Deluxe, instead of in Free Edition, include:
·
Student loan interest deduction
·
Retirement savings contribution credit for 401(k) and IRA
contributions
·
Education credits
·
Child & dependent care credit
Go here for more info on which forms are included in
TurboTax Free Edition.
