Are you using Online Free Edition?   Free Edition cannot prepare Form 1040.  Are you asking how to upgrade to Deluxe because you have items in your return that requires a Form 1040?

Online Deluxe is 39.99 for Federal, and 36.99 for State.

I can tell you how to upgrade to Deluxe.   Whether Deluxe will prepare a Form 1040, or a Form 1040A or 1040EZ depends on what items are you in your return.   If your situation doesn't require a Form 1040, then even Deluxe will choose which of the forms to use.

Here's how to upgrade:

• Log in and open your return by choosing "Take me to my return."
• Once it is past the blue-green screen, click in the left menu column on the UPGRADE link.
• On the Upgrade screen, choose the edition you want by selecting it way down in the lower left corner of the screen.   If an edition is grayed out or not offered, that means you are already in that edition or a higher edition.
