File for an extension

When I used turbotax to file my taxes, it kept rejecting my information online and then it tells me to print my returns and mail them by April 17, 2018. Although I did mail my returns before but they were sent back to me right on the deadline because I forgot to attach my w2 forms with it, I thought I lost them until later on found them. I was just wondering if I'm doing something wrong. My tax returns still say I get a refund.

Get them mailed. Attach your W-2 and use a mailing service that will track your mailed return—UPS or certified mail so you will know they received them. If you are getting a refund there is no penalty for missing the filing deadline. You can still receive your refund. Federal and state returns go to separate mailing addresses.

Yes mailing it is what I'm talking about.

Yes--get it mailed.  You can still file and get your refund up to 3 years from the deadline when you are getting a refund.

For this tax season, the TurboTax Easy Extension feature will be available to customers in late March.  You'll be able to file an extension thru TurboTax by following these steps:

  1. Click on the Federal Taxes tab
  2. Click on the Other Tax Situations subtab
  3. Scroll down to Other Tax Forms
  4. Select File An Extension

The important thing to remember about extensions is that they only extend your time to file the return.  If you owe money, then the IRS and states expect you to pay by the normal tax deadline -- there's no extension for paying. So if you're filing an extension and you believe you'll owe, then you'll want to mail a check to the IRS or state.

On the other hand, If you normally receive a refund, and you don't anticipate any change, then you don't need to send payment.

In regard to your state return: Some states will piggyback off the federal extension, so there's no additional state form to file.  Other states require you to submit their own extension forms.  TurboTax will walk you thru the state extension as well as the federal process to ensure you follow the requirements of your state.

You can type estimates paid in the search box at the top of your return and click Find and it will give you a link to Jump To the screen where you enter Extension Payments.

To enter the amount you paid with an extension (including state extension)  go to
Federal Taxes (or Personal for desktop H&B version)
Deductions and Credits
Then scroll way down to Estimates and Other Taxes Paid
Other Income Taxes - Click the Start or Update button

Next page second section Payments with Extension
Either Visit All or Click Start or Update by the extension you paid

Pay attention to which year you are entering for a State Extension payment.  A prior year state extension payment is also deductible on the federal return so be sure to enter it here.

If I filed an extension and then paid my taxes due, how long a wait is there before the payment that was submitted with the extension is refunded? I overpaid. Like by a lot :-(.

You get it back when you file your return.  A payment made with an extension goes an 1040 line 70 and is accounted for in your refund or tax due.  So make sure you enter it on line 70.

Ok so if I failed to do that and filed without that, do I need to file a correction to get that money back?

The IRS should automatically catch it and add it in for you and send it back.   I would wait and see or call the IRS at 1-800-829-1040
