Writing off tuition as a 1099

Hello all! I was hoping to get some advice. I was a dentist that went back to residency. I worked as a 1099 +w2 for half the year as a general dentist then enrolled in a residency where I paid $XX,XXX in tuition. Im wondering am I able to write off a part of the $XX,XXX as CE from my 1099? Or does my residency count as a new trade thereby not qualifying? My residency is in endodontics (so still dentistry, but a specialist). Ive always done my own taxes through turbotax so Im not sure where to reach out. Thanks!

Yes, if you were Self-Employed (paid via Form 1099) and the education is related to the job skill you already use to earn that Self-employment income, that would be considered work-related education expense and can be claimed on Schedule C .

Endodontics is a branch of dentistry.
