Good News finds my last year file but continues to search. 20 minutes later still searching... Will not transfer in the file (correct file.)
You'll need to sign in or create an account to connect with an expert.
Ignore the fact that it continues to search. When you see the correct file in the list, click the "Transfer Return" button next to that file, even though it's still searching.
I did what you suggested prior to posting. I even cold booted my system and tried again.
I have experienced this problem, in prior years with different solutions. One year the solution was to update last year's product, open that file, and save. I have not tried that.
Thanks for the support. I appreciate help!
What exactly does "will not transfer" mean? What happens when you click the "Transfer Return" button for the file that you want to transfer from? If you get an error message, what is the complete exact message?
Are you using TurboTax in Windows or on a Mac?
Do try opening and saving the 2023 file that you want to transfer.
If you have multiple 2023 tax returns with similar names, make sure you are transferring the correct one.
I am using Windows 10. I just launch the 2024 apps and received a 16 minute update. When trying to update, I now receive the "Reading your return" which at least is a start in the right directions to transferring. However, quits almost immediately. Neither file does not transfer. The 2 files are: I had opened the 2023, received an update, looked around in the data using the forms, and saved, and then tried again. I attempted to open these files; the copy and the original.
Your suggestions that I make sure I am opening the right file, I only had one file and now I have two.
Thank you.
It's not clear exactly what you are doing. You cannot open a .tax2023 file in the 2024 software.
Are you starting the 2024 software by double-clicking a .tax2024 file in Windows? Don't do that. Start the 2024 TurboTax program by double-clicking the desktop icon (or by clicking on it in the Windows Start menu). Then start a new return. On the first screen when you start a new return, click "Transfer Return" for the 2023 file that you want to transfer from.
You cannot transfer into a 2024 tax return that is already started, or into an existing .tax2024 file. You can only transfer when you first start a new return.
Are you trying these steps? Try opening 2023 program and see if you can get your 2023 return to show up in it. Go to FILE - OPEN. Then save it again with a name and place you can find. Go to File - Save As. Then start a new 2024 return, go up to File-New and transfer from the 2023 file. If it doesn’t find your .tax2023 file you can browse to where it is.
Suggestion by you: Start the 2024 TurboTax program by double-clicking the desktop icon (or by clicking on it in the Windows Start menu). I have always use the desktop icon. I have been using the PC version for many years. I have the Premier 2024 version.
I do not have an existing 2024 file. When the apps does not transfer, I do not save/create a 2024 file.
I open the app by double clicking on the desktop icon and may do an update. I click the "begin button", wait, click on "darken/highlighted" file, click on transfer return button, the "Turbotax Premier 2024" top bar turns white where --receive a message "Reading your return"--"Turbotax Premier 2024" to bar turns black -- and then stops prior to transferring. The transfer button stays selected. The Searching for tax files continues.
I tried to give you a view of what is being done. Thank you.
I'm at a loss. Try calling TurboTax support. With your permission, they can look at your screen and see what's going on.
