Why was our standard mile deduction not applied to the total amount due?

It shows that our vehicle deduction is $12,107, however, this amount isn't taking down what we owe.. Wondering if we did something incorrectly.

Are you claiming this expense as Job Expenses for W-2 income?

If so, this is no longer deductible on your federal return.

If you are claiming it on Schedule E as a rental expense, your rental losses may be limited due to passive activity loss limitations.

Hey! We're claiming this on 1099 for job expenses.

In general, this deduction is no longer available for W-2 employees.

The business deductions on Form 2106 are allowed for Armed Forces reservist, a qualified performing artist, a fee-basis state or local government official, or an individual with a disability claiming impairment-related work expenses. All other taxpayers can no longer deduct these expenses beginning in tax year 2018. However, some states still allow the deduction. You would enter these expenses on your Federal return to carry to the state.

Follow these steps:

  • Under the Federal menu, choose Deductions & Credits
  • Expand the menu for Employment Expenses
  • Click Start/Revisit next to Job Expenses for W-2 Income
  • Enter the information on the screens that follow

Form 2106

If you are claiming these miles against self-employment income, follow these steps:

  • From the Federal menu, click on Income & Expenses
  • Expand the menu for Self-Employment
  • Click Start/Revisit next to Self-employment income & expenses
  • Edit next to the business or Add the business if needed
  • Include the expense in Vehicle
