Your are posting your question from online Deluxe. There are always separate fees for federal and state when you use a paid version of the online software.
Thanks for the answer. I’ll never buy this online again! I could’ve paid half the price if I bought it in a store!
@jsslson-aol-com There are some significant differences in the cost effectiveness of using online vs. the CD/download. When you buy the CD/download it usually includes the state software--unless you purchase Deluxe without the state--which is possible to do.
Thanks, but I needed the state form also. It just doesn’t make any sense to charge more Online for something you can get for free if it was bought in the store. It’s the same program from the same company!
Sorry---you have to pay attention to the fees when you are using online software. The fees are displayed on the screens and it shows you that the state is an additional fee:

I originally started out with the basic free forms. When I finished all the taxes, it said it could not complete because I had to upgrade to deluxe. At that point I could either pay for deluxe and state or delete everything and start over!
If I paid for 2024 tax year Deluxe from Costco why is Turbotax now asking me to pay for the one state I need? I started my taxes and it let me do my federal and state without asking me to pay for the state. Now when I go back to finish my taxes it is asking me to purchase my state for $40. I am confused and a little mad that it is asking me to pay for it after paying for it in the purchase of the software download. And I do not intend to efile either of the federal or state returns.
Look carefully at what you purchased. Retailers sell desktop Deluxe both with and without the state program. Some users do not have to file a state return so it is sold both ways. Did you accidentally buy the one that only has the program for federal? If so, it costs about $40 to download a state program. And it will be $25 to e-file the state unless you choose to file the state by mail instead.
Nope, the box the license code is in says it includes 1 state. See the pics below.
@NewbDad There is a $25 e-file charge for each state tax return e-filed using the Desktop editions. You received one Free state program download. This does not mean the there is no charge for e-filing the state return.
You can avoid the state e-file charge by printing and mailing the state tax return.
Notice the box shows a Federal E-File. But not a State E-File.
Thank you for the reply. As I stated above, I do not plan to Efile. so how can I get my free state return please? TurboTax won't let me continue with our state tax return until I pay $40 to prepare the state return.
Where can I check and/or put my license order in the app?
Thank you,
Mark
And now the app keeps telling me to reinstall or repair the app because it is missing files that it needs to run. I have done that more than 5 times now and it still is not working properly. Is the executable file on the install app page compromised?
I have been using TurboTax for well over 10 years and never had this kind of problem with CD versions.
Thank you in advance for a reply that can help me.
Well you all must have had a switch turned on for me. After uninstall and reinstall #7 or so, I was finally able to install a state for free and am moving forward. Thank you for whatever you did on your end.
Please bring back the CDs for 2025 or fix the download app.
Thank you,
Mark
