Why is there a fee to efile the state return?

When you use the TurboTax Free Edition and file a simple tax return (1040EZ or 1040A form with standard deduction), there is no charge to file your Federal or state income tax returns. However, if your tax situation is more complex and you use another version of TurboTax, there is an additional fee for filing a state income tax return.
