IND-996: The Dependent/Qualifying Person Identity Protection Personal Identification Number (IP PIN) provided on the return is not valid.

If a dependent or qualifying person listed on your return has ever received an IP PIN, a CP01A notice, or opted into the IRS's IP PIN pilot program, that person's special 6-digit IP PIN needs to be on the return to validate their identity for e-filing.

Solution

First, start by finding your dependent or qualifying person's 6-digit IP PIN. Here's how:

  • Look on the CP01A letter they received in December or January for their  2017 taxes. IP PINs from prior tax years won't work.
  • If they lost or never got a CP01A letter, retrieve their IP PIN online at the IRS's Get an IP PIN site.
  • If unable to retrieve their IP PIN online, you can have it reissued (allow up to 21 days). More info

Then, follow these instructions (Mobile app users: Sign in at TurboTax.com in your mobile browser or another internet-enabled device):

  1. Sign in to TurboTax if you haven't already signed in.
    • Click or tap any orange "Fix" buttons you see before proceeding to the next step.
  2. At the Welcome back to TurboTax message, click or tap Fix It Now.
  3. Follow the onscreen instructions to enter your dependent or qualifying person's 2017 IP PIN and re-file your return.

I literally copied/pasted from the PIN retrieval site. My tax returns keeps being rejected!

By any chance, did you get the rejection pin resolved. I've been trying for a week now to figure out why mine keeps saying rejected too. It seems there are quite a few people with the same problem.

I got the same message despite having never received any IP PIN from the IRS.  TurboTax agent did the same google research I did and had nothing valuable to share.   IRS ended my phone call: "too much volume." My wife and I suffered through getting IP PINs issued from the IRS and I refiled.  Same code.  Super frustrating.   TurboTax simplies repoints me to the same "help" material over and over.

In case its useful for others.  It turned out that one of my college age daughters (currently overseas) had been issued an IP PIN.  I was able to get that from her.  What's so frustrating is that the error message gives you no indication which individual might have been issued a PIN so its trial and error.

How long does it take for an IP PIN to be "active" once you get it issued online?  I created an IP PIN for me and my wife today, then looked up where to enter the IP PINs in Turbotax and refiled, twice, and still getting rejected.  I tried removing the 5 digit PIN but that doesn't work either, Turbotax requires the 5 digit PIN also

I got my IRS PIN 3 months ago and TurboTax still rejects it. Complete waste of money to use this service to E-File. Headed to the post office today to get it postmarked in time.

I have my son's pin, but turbo tax fix doesn't offer anywhere to enter the pin. When I went to fix it just said I was ready to file... No where can I enter the pin for my dependent
