Why don't we qualify for marriage credit when we are filing married filing jointly?

What marriage credit are you referring to?  There is no such credit on a federal return.   But if you file a joint return, you are taxed at a lower rate than the "Single" rate, and your standard deduction is $29,200 (+ $1550 for each spouse 65 or older).

There is no federal "marriage credit".   If you are asking about a state credit, please identify the state.  The rules vary, but generally you both must have income from working. Then there are adjustments that can disqualify you.
